Controversy as Biden Blocks Release of Special Interview Tapes

By Boniface Ihiasota, USA

The United States President, Joe Biden has invoked executive privilege to block the release of audio recordings of his interviews from the investigation into his handling of classified files.

Excel Magazine International gathered that a letter from the Justice Department to Republicans in Congress confirmed Biden’s assertion of executive privilege, denying the demand for the release of his interviews with Special Counsel Robert Hur.

BBC reported that the Justice Department cited executive privilege, a legal doctrine protecting certain executive branch records from public disclosure, as the reason for withholding the recordings.

US Attorney General, Merrick Garland criticized House Republicans for what he termed “unprecedented and unfounded attacks” on the Justice Department, and he is likely to face contempt of Congress charges over the decision.

Despite cooperating fully with the investigation, including a five-hour interview with Hur’s team, President Biden affirmed his decision to withhold the tapes in a separate letter from his White House counsel to the committee chairmen.

The release of Hur’s report, which followed a year-long inquiry into alleged mishandling of classified documents by Biden after leaving the vice presidency, has sparked controversy.

Republicans have seized on the report’s findings, claiming they underscore concerns about the president’s age and mental acuity.

Vice President Kamala Harris labeled Hur’s report as “clearly politically motivated,” while Hur defended it as “necessary, accurate, and fair” during a congressional hearing.

Despite the Justice Department providing full transcripts of the special counsel’s interviews and relevant documents to House Republicans, the refusal to release the recordings has drawn criticism.

House committees are considering contempt resolutions against Attorney General Garland, but the outcome remains uncertain, as Republicans hold only a slim majority in the chamber.
