Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico has been shot and wounded in an apparent assassination attempt, leaving him in a critical condition, Excel Magazine International can report.

The incident occurred as he greeted crowds outside a cultural community center in Handlova following a government meeting.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing several shots before Fico’s security detail swiftly intervened, transporting him to a nearby car. He was then rushed to a hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

Excel Magazine International learnt the alleged assailant has been detained by police, with reports suggesting he is a 71-year-old writer and political activist, although no official confirmation at the press time.

In a statement, outgoing President Zuzana Caputova condemned the attack, expressing shock and solidarity with Fico.

She emphasized the need to curb divisive rhetoric in society, attributing the incident to escalating political tensions.

Fico, 59, had recently returned to power in Slovakia after elections, leading a populist-nationalist coalition.

His tenure has been marked by controversy, including contentious political decisions and widespread public protests.

The attack has prompted widespread condemnation from political figures, with President-elect Peter Pellegrini denouncing it as an unprecedented threat to Slovak democracy.
