U.S. Government Warns of Cyberattacks on Water Systems

The U.S. government has issued a warning to state governors regarding ongoing cyberattacks targeting water and sewage systems across the nation.

In a letter obtained by Excel Magazine International, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan cautioned that “disabling cyberattacks are striking water and wastewater systems throughout the United States.”

The letter specifically identified alleged Iranian and Chinese cyber operatives as the perpetrators.

Sullivan and Regan referenced a recent incident where hackers, believed to be affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, reportedly disabled a controller at a water facility in Pennsylvania.

They also highlighted the actions of a Chinese hacking group named “Volt Typhoon,” which they claimed had compromised the IT infrastructure of multiple critical systems, including drinking water facilities, across the U.S. and its territories.

Describing these attacks as potential disruptors of the vital lifeline of clean and safe drinking water, the letter emphasized the significant costs that affected communities could incur.
