UK, US Sign MoU on AI Safety

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, alongside UK Tech Minister Michelle Donelan, have signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday, marking a significant collaboration in the realm of advanced artificial intelligence (AI), Excel Magazine International can report.

The landmark agreement underscores a commitment between the UK and US to jointly develop robust methodologies for assessing the safety of AI tools and their underlying systems.

This bilateral accord, Excel Magazine learnt is the first of its kind.

In her remarks, Minister Donelan emphasized the pivotal importance of addressing the challenges posed by AI, stating, “Ensuring the safe development of AI is a shared global issue.”

She stressed the necessity of collaborative efforts to confront the risks associated with AI while harnessing its potential to enhance human lives.

This agreement builds upon prior commitments made during the AI Safety Summit held at Bletchley Park in November 2023, attended by industry leaders such as Sam Altman from OpenAI, Demis Hassabis from Google DeepMind, and Elon Musk.

During the summit, both nations established AI Safety Institutes aimed at evaluating both open and closed-source AI systems.

Although while current AI systems primarily excel at singular, intelligent tasks, concerns linger regarding the potential risks posed by more sophisticated “general” AI tools capable of emulating a wider range of human tasks.

Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt of the University of Oxford acknowledged the dual nature of AI’s capabilities, likening it to other sciences that can be both beneficial and potentially harmful.

However, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo expressed confidence that the agreement would facilitate a deeper understanding of AI systems, enabling governments to provide more informed guidance.

She reiterated the collaborative nature of the partnership, affirming a commitment to proactively address concerns rather than evade them.
