Igbo Daughters Group, Umuada Igbo Hosts Maiden International Convention

The Umuada Igbo Association hosted its inaugural international convention in Houston, bringing together women of Igbo origin from Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Rivers, and Delta states in Nigeria, as well as from various parts of the world. The event provided an opportunity for attendees to reconnect with their core Igbo roots and relive pleasant childhood memories from their homeland.
The first international convention of Umuada Igbo Association took place at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Houston on July 7, 2018, providing a special opportunity for Igbo women from all over the world to gather, socialize, and share meals as authentic Umuada. In addition, the convention allowed women to discuss important topics concerning the well-being and advancement of their fellow Umuada and the larger Igbo community in Nigeria.
During her speech at the event, Ezenwanyi Lady Bridget Akazie, the founder and grand patron of Umuada Igbo Organization, highlighted the organization’s mission to promote and propagate the Igbo language, culture, and tradition. She explained that the organization aims to instill in people and children the long-standing family values and extended family system, as well as to promote peace, progress, unity, and camaraderie among Igbo women, families, and society in general. Additionally, the organization is registered as a non-profit and non-governmental organization in the United States.
“The title Umuada Igbo carries great prestige and embodies our duty and loyalty to our Igbo heritage, culture, and traditions which are a reflection of our resilient Igbo family values and extended family system.” The three-day gathering also included the official installation of the Houston, Texas chapter’s leadership, which was covered by Excel International Magazine.
Lolo Christie Nwaiwu, who is the National President of Umuada Igbo Organization, urged the newly inaugurated leadership executives to make a positive impact in the lives of their fellow members and extend a hand of fellowship to those who are less fortunate. The event was also marked by a special fundraising ceremony, which aimed to support the group’s interventionist programs in Nigeria and help the less privileged both in the USA and Nigeria.
