UN Member States Renew Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

 

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, held from July 8-17, concluded with a renewed commitment from nations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, Excel Magazine International can report.

The forum, organized under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), brought together world leaders to address the pressing issue of sustainable development.

This year’s theme, “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises,” highlighted the need for effective delivery of sustainable, resilient, and innovative solutions.

The forum included a three-day ministerial segment, where nations engaged in robust debates and voting on key amendments.

A significant proposal, backed by 105 nations, urged states to refrain from unilateral economic measures that hinder development in developing countries.

Another amendment, proposed by Israel, sought to delete a paragraph linking sustainable development to peace and security, but was rejected with 122 nations voting for its retention.

ECOSOC President Paula Narváez emphasized the urgency of implementing the 2030 Agenda, stating, “This high-level political forum has highlighted that it is not too late to make sustainable development a reality.”

She praised the leadership of Ambassador José Blanco and Ambassador Merete Fjeld Brattested for facilitating complex negotiations.

The adopted ministerial declaration demonstrates the collective resolve to accelerate SDG implementation and advance sustainable development.

As Narváez concluded, “We will continue to renew multilateral efforts to fulfil the promise of the 2030 Agenda and leave no one behind.”

The outcome of the forum sets the stage for intensified global cooperation to address poverty, climate change, and inequality, with just six years remaining to achieve the SDGs.
